West Bengal Board Model Questions & Answers For Class XI

Asleep in the Valley' by Arthur Rimbaud –  Essay-Type questions and answers,Class 11, WBCHSE

1. How does this picture of the soldier describe  the tragedy of war ? Explain .
Ans. ‘Asleep in the Valley’ is a war poem.  This poem  portrays a soldier. The soldier is sleeping. In the green valley he lies. He is open-mouthed. The ferny bed seems to comfort him. The sunrays fall on his body. His feet are among  the flowers. His smile is like an infant’s. It is a very gentle smile without guile. It seems that there is nothing wrong with the soldier. But suddenly something startles us. There are two red holes in the soldier’s side. It is a tragic discovery . At once the picture of gloom and horror of war flashes upon our mind. We have a peculiar feeling. We become conscious of the tragedy of war. The soldier is not asleep. He is dead. He is gone- gone for ever. The tragedy of war becomes unbearable.

2. Look at the work ‘asleep’. What do we normally associate  with the word ? When does the reader recognize that the soldier is asleep in a different sense ?
Ans.  Asleep is normally associated with a sleeping man. We use the word ‘asleep’ to mean to say that  he is in sleep and soon he will rise from sleep. Sleep is a normal physical activity. It is sweet and desirable for  all living beings.
But  the word asleep is used in the poem ‘Asleep in this poem in a different sense. Here Asleep means dead. In the poem we see the picture of a sleeping  soldier. He lies in the green valley. Green grass, bright sunshine, insect’s  humming all stand for joy and beauty of life. But the readers soon recognize the actual state of the soldier. The two red holes  in his side point out that the man is a victim of war. At once the meaning of the word is clear to us.

3. “In his side there are two red holes.” What do the two red holes depict ? How is the pity of war  reflected in the line ?
Ans. “The two red holes” mentioned in the last line of the poem are actually bullet wounds. The soldier has received the wounds in the warfront and these fatal wounds are the cause of his untimely and unfortunate death.
The line reveals  the pity of war. Rimbaud had first hand experience of war. In warfare, the youth become the inevitable victims. Rimbaud understood the futility of war. Therefore, sleeping  of the soldier  is presented to bring out the sense of pity in the readers because he is actually dead. The two bullet wounds  have ended his life.

4. “A soldier , very young, lies open-mouthed”. How is the soldier sleeping  ? How is the place where he sleeps ?
Ans.  The soldier is sleeping in a sunlit valley, surrounded with mountains. His bed is warm after soaking the sunlight that prevents  the soldier from catching cold. He is sleeping with a pillow of ferns under his head. His feet  are among the flowers that grow in the valley. He has one hand on his breast and he sleeps in an undisturbed  manner. He has an innocent smile  on his lips and it appears that he is peacefully sleeping.
The place where the soldier sleeps is attractive because of its greenery. The place is warm as it receives abundant sun rays. Insects hum around  the place to gather honey from a variety of flowers.

5. Write a note on the images used by Rimbaud in the poem .
Ans. The poem Rimbaud uses different images to describe the beauties of nature in the poem ‘Asleep in the Valley’. The valley is, as it were, a green hollow. The stream flows through the valley like a long silvery ribbon. The sunlight comes down like a stream and beautifies the valley. The grass covered area where the soldier is lying is called his bed. Ferns grow form a pillow for the soldier to rest his head. The humming of insects fails to awaken the soldier from a deep sleep. The young soldier’s smile is called guileless and the soldier is compared to an innocent child. But a terribly shocking image is presented at the end of the poem. The bullet wounds that the soldier has received are compared with red holes. Therefore the images used by the poet are not only decorative but also functional.

1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

A young woman who had nearly slipped into a coma following  a drug overdose was miraculously revived by doctors after a 20 day battle. The 23 year old girl had been unconscious for two weeks. Her blood pressure had dropped to 50 and heart rate shot up to 130 . Her organs had failed and fluid had collected in her lungs, forcing doctors to put her on life support.
Susmita Ray (name changed ) had consumed 50 Mamlodipin tablets that are generally to lower blood pressure. She immediately fell unconscious and suffered a sharp blood pressure drop. By the time she was rushed to  hospital Susmita had gone into ‘refractory hypotensive shock’ from a sudden blood pressure fall and showed initial signs of a multi-organ failure . Fluid had collected in her lungs and she couln’t breathe without support.
“The challenge before us was two-fold. First, we had to revive her blood pressure that refused to go up. There is no specific antidote available for drug overdose like this one. Secondly, the highly protein-bound drug that had gone into her system was extremely difficult to drain out. Dialysis can’t drain out such medicines,” said Arindam Kar, critical care head who led a team of doctors at Media Superspecialty.
The medical team took an alternative  route. It used an albumin-based dialysis, a specialized method that sucks out poison from the system in extreme cases. “We gave her drugs to raise her blood pressure and used an advanced monitoring system to screen all major parameters like cardiovascular functioning , liver, lungs and kidneys. None of the organs was functioning normally . We even monitored her response. After about seven  days, she started showing signs of improvement. “Her pressure shot up marginally and the functioning of liver improved. The kidneys, too, revived and her heartbeat started normalizing,” said Kar.
