Short Questions and Answers From Jimmy Valentine  By O.Henry

Essay Type Questions for 5 Marks :

1. How does O Henry establish a contrast between Jimmy Valentine and ‘Ralph D. Spencer ?
Ans.  Jimmy Valentine and Ralph D. Spencer are the two names of the same person at different phases of life. Both are smart, handsome and intelligent. Both have friends.
But they differ considerably in profession , association, place and sphere of work, financial condition, social status and mental disposition. Jimmy Valentine is an infamous safecracker, but Ralph D. Spencer is a successful businessman. While Jimmy Valentine is a criminal who Ben Price wants to arrest, Ralph D. Spencer deserves Ben Price’s mercy and admiration because of his nobility. Out of generous feeling Ralph D. Spencer saves a little girl trapped inside the vault. While Ralph uses the tools for burglary, he uses the same tools Jimmy would use once to rescue the girl. In Fact Ralph D. Spencer is the reformed criminal who loves makes an honest man. Jimmy Valentine  completely befools the police. But Ralph D. Spencer can not befools the police.

 2. Retrace Jimmy Valentine’s course of action from the moment he is granted parole to the time he reaches his room.
Ans. At a quarter past seven in the morning Jimmy was ready to come out of the jail.. The clerk handed him a railway ticket and a five dollar .The warden gave him a cigar and shok hands with him and Jimmy Valentine 9762 walked out into the sunshine.
Disregarding the song of the birds, the waving green trees and the smell of the flowers, Jimmy , coming out of the jail, went  straight for a restaurant. There he tasted the first sweet joys of liberty in the shape of a broiled chicken and a bottle of white wine followed by a cigarette. On the way he gave a quarter to a blind man and  went to the station. Then he met his friend Mike Dolan and took key of his house. He went upstairs and unlocked the door. He saw his collar- button. Then he dragged out a dust covered suitcase.

3.  What elements of this story are ironic ?
Or,  “O. Henry has given a real twist in the ‘ending’ of the story” – Justify.  ( Only 2nd Para)
Ans.   O. Henry  uses a number of literary devices to enliven the story. In  the story, jimmy’s burglary tools serve as tools of rescue. This  is  a fine instance of situational irony.  It is  ironical  that the banker shows his vault to a safecracker.
Irony reaches its height when  Jimmy was going to be arrested by Ben Price after getting exposed while doing an angelic job of saving  a five year old child from the closed vault of the bank at  Elmore. Ben Price, the detective himself comes forward to jimmy’s rescue as he refuses to recognize him in order to allow him to remain  in safety in his newly blossoming life with a beautiful girl Annabel Adams. Ben price gave  priority to human quality above everything else and therefore deliberately allows  Jimmy Valentine to lead a normal happy life  with his  fiancée and would be wife Annabel.

4. Do you believe that  a person who has a record of criminal behavior in the past can change permanently for the better ? If yes, what influences could be responsible for that change ? If not,  explain why ?
Ans.  Yes, I believe that a person who has a record of criminal behavior in the past can change permanently for the better.
The sight  of beautiful Annabel brought about this change in him. The moment he looked at her and she coloured a little Jimmy forgot his past life and became another man. He collected information about her . Instantly he decided to start a new and honest life after marrying  Annabel, the “finest girl on earth”.
Jimmy changes name to one Ralph D. Spencer and booked a room in a hotel close to the bank and decided to leave his old business of “doing crooked thing” and live a straight life – “the  only life” with Annabel. He  made  many good friends and accomplished the wish of his heart by  meeting Annabel and became more and more captivated by her beauty and charms and secured the permission of Mr. Adams to marry Annabel.
Thus it was Annabel’s love that changed the dangerous criminal into a fine gentleman.

5.  Describe the contents of jimmy’s suitcase. Why do you think he “gazes fondly”  at them ?
Ans. Jimmy Valentine was a safecracker. He had a suitcase, dusty and old, which contains his valuable kit of safe-cracker’s tools. It was kept  in the wall of his house. It was a complete set, made of specially tempered steel. These tools were made in  the East. These tools were  latest designs in drills, punches, braces and bits, jimmies, clamps and augers, with two or three novelties, invented by Jimmy himself . He was proud for this novelties. He spent over nine hundred dollars to make them.
I think that he was planning another burglar. He was also proud for these tools. So, he gazed  at them.
