Important Long Questions and Answers From 'Thank You Ma’am'
1. Why did Roger not try to run away later although he had an opportunity to do so ?
Ans. “Thank You Ma’am” , a famous short story by Langston Hughes, is based on the transformation of a young boy. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones did not tell anybody both at home and outside what had happened. She did not threaten him with police action either. Rather upon reaching home she let him loose and talked to him very softly. She forced him to wash his face and arranged for their supper. Like his mother she did not get angry with him to learn that he needed money to buy a pair of suede shoes. Instead she said that he would have asked her some money to get those shoes. Roger was then deeply moved by the hospitality of Mrs. Bates. He understood that he was not a thief in her eye. Her love and kindness changed his mind. Roger had many chances of escaping. But he preferred to honour the trust of Mrs. Jones.
• “He could make a dash for it down the hall. He could run, run, run, run, run !” – Where do these lines occur ? Who is the speaker ? Who is ‘he’ ? Why didn’t he run ?
Ans. These lines occur in the short story ‘Thank You Ma’am’ by Langston Hughes.
The speaker is Langston Hughes, the writer of the story.
‘He’ is Roger.

2. “The woman did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run now.”- Why did not the woman watch the boy anymore?
Ans. Mrs. Jones could understand that Roger was ashamed of his misdeeds. She did not want to mistrust him any more. She felt that Roger would never break her trust. So she did not inform the police. She left her purse with him when she went to cook food for him. This is a new experience for Roger. Probably for the first time a man or a woman kept so much faith in him. The young boy seeking redemption did not want to be mistrusted. Mrs. Jones could easily read the thought process of the boy and that is why she did not watch him while cooking.
3. How did Mrs. Jones bring Roger at her residence? What did Mrs. Jones do after taking Roger at her residence ?
Ans. At first Mrs. Jones picked the shirt of Roger and dragged him down the street. Stopping on the road, Mrs. Jones jerked him around in front of her, put a half nelson about his neck and continued to drag him .
Reaching her doorstep , she opened the door and dragged Roger inside down a hall. There Roger was loosed .Then Mrs. Jones ordered him to wash his face. She went to kitchen to cook some food for the supper. At the dinner table she talked about her profession and the customers. After the dinner , she bade Roger good bye and shut the door.

During this supper the woman did not ask the boy anything abut his dwelling place and the folks at home. She told him about her job in a hotel beautyshop that stayed open late.Mrs. Jones briefly told him about her past life
5. “ I would ;teach you right from wrong” – Who said this, to whom and when ? How did the speaker transform the person spoken to here ?
- Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones said this to Roger, who tried to snatch her bag when she was dragging him along the road towards her house.
Roger, after being caught by the strong woman, was afraid that she would send him to the jail. But Mrs. Jones brought him home and took motherly care by cleaning him up and cooking him a meal. Roger felt assured and when she offered him ten dollars for buying suede shoes for which he had committed the crime, Roger was emotionally stirred and was transformed from a thief to grateful lad.
6. “Eat some more , son” – Who is the speaker ? What is offered by the speaker to the listener ? What picture of the speaker’s character is revealed in this line ?
- The speaker here is Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones in the story “Thank You Ma’am.’
- Mrs. Jones offered Roger a supper of lima beans, ham, a piece of cake and cocoa milk.
- When Mrs. Jones caught Roger snatching her bag, she was very strict with him but once she reached home she became quite tender with this young unfortunate boy. She told him to clean his face and to comb his hair. Then she cooked dinner for the boy, and like a mother , urged him to eat some more. All these revealed the maternal affection lying hidden beneath her apparently tough and strong personality.

Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper about the necessity of planting more trees in the country/afforestation in the country/ social forestry programmes in the country.
Sub: Necessity of planting more trees
We know there is an eternal bond between man and trees. Trees help us in many ways. They supply us fresh oxygen. Trees give us food, fruits, fuel, wood, timber, medicine and many other useful things. The trees check soil erosion. They are also the harbingers of rain to produce crops. Moreover, they give us shelter and shade. They protect the wild life. The absence of trees creates the desert. Trees help us fight against environmental pollution. It is interesting to note that 33.3% land is required as forests in any country to maintain ecological balance. We cannot think of life without trees. Vacant lands are becoming more and more scarce because of growing population. So, we must all grow more trees and stop deforestation.
