The Poetry of Earth - Important Long Questions with Answers for HS, WBCHSE

1. Why  does the poet choose the sonnet  from for his poem ?
Or, Consider ‘The Poetry of Earth’ as a sonnet .
Keats’s poem, ‘The Poetry of Earth’, is a fine specimen of sonnet. It follows the Petrarchan form of sonnet. The poem contains fourteen lines. It is divided into two parts, the octave and the sestet.  .While the octave depicts the song of summer, the sestet presents the music of winter. Sonnet form is ideal  to show this contrast
A sonnet is a lyrical. It is intended to be sung. The poet celebrates the continuity of earth’s music. A sonnet is the fit medium  for the expression of the poet’s feelings. The poet wants to say nothing more than the eternity of earth’s music . So the sonnet form is the best medium for this purpose.

2. Write a note on the title of the poem, The Poetry of earth’.
In the sonnet, ‘The Poetry of Earth’ , keats develops the theme that poetry i.e. music in Nature never stops. In summer, when the song birds are tired with the hot sun, the Grasshopper chrips merrily from hedge to hedge. Undisturbeed by the scorching sun, he expresses immense joy and enlivens  Nature with his song. Thus , the Grasshopper becomes the poet of summer and keeps the poetry of earth alive. Similarly, the Cricket is the poet of winter. Summer and winter represent the wonderful cycle of seasons and the song of the Grasshopper and Cricket show the continuity of the poetry of the earth. Thus, in the poem , Keats reiterates his firm belief that music in Nature never comes to an end even amidst changes of seasons. Hence the title is apt.

3. Give the substance of the poem.
The poetry of earth knows no death. It exists in all seasons. In summer birds  stop singing. They are too weary to sing. But earth’s music does not stop. The grass-hopper begins to hum. In absence  of birds he takes the lead. Thus earth’s music continues uninterruptedly . after summer comes winter. The atmosphere is dull and lifeless. On winter evening frosts deepen silence.  People take rest at home.  It seems that no music  is possible now. But suddenly  is heard the song  of cricket. The man sitting beside the fire feels  warm with the song . He feels it is but the continuation of the grasshopper’s song.
